There are places in the Himalayas that imprint on your soul — and Kufri, perched just above Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, is one of them.
Where Shimla seems a bit too much sometimes and naturally overcrowded, Kufri feels rather the different. Don’t get me wrong, Shimla has its own charm. But Kufri, just about half an hour away, feels refreshingly different.
From my personal experience, what I seek in the mountains is simple: open views, silence, and the feeling of being close to nature. That’s where Kufri truly stands out. Here, you often wake up to sweeping mountain views right from your hotel — something that’s increasingly rare in Shimla due to the dense construction around it. Kufri feels calmer, more open, and closer to the Himalayas I actually want to experience.

What Makes Kufri Special
It’s close proximity to Shimla. I mean everyone visits Shimla but find it crowded. Kufri is less than 15km from Shimla yet offers a complete different feel. For me, Kufri was a perfect balance between Shimla and Chail (between too crowded and too quiet).
I remember my first visit like it was yesterday — driving through winding mountain roads, crisp pine scents in the air, and that exhilarating first glimpse of snow-capped peaks in the distance. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or a first-time mountain explorer, Kufri delivers breathtaking scenery, adventure, and pure Himalayan magic.
Its altitude (at around 2,322 metres above sea level) moreover promises pleasant weather throughout the year. Kufri combines Himalayan scenery, snow activities, and family-friendly fun.
Why Kufri is unique:
- Snow sports and skiing in winter.
- Peaceful green valleys in summer.
- Family fun zones like Kufri Fun World.
- Kufri Zoo to see wildlife including leopard and bear.
- Wild Himalayan flora and fauna at the Nature Park.
- Panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges including Kedarnath & Badrinath.
For many travellers, Kufri is the Snow Capital near Shimla, offering everything from gentle winter fun to thrilling hillside treks.

Best Time To Visit Kufri
The best time to visit Kufri really depends on what you’re expecting from your mountain trip — snow, greenery, or just pleasant weather.
Summer (April to June)
Summer is ideal if you want to escape the heat of the plains. Kufri enjoys cool, comfortable weather during these months, making it perfect for sightseeing, nature walks, and outdoor activities.
The landscapes are snow-free, the skies are usually clear, and you get uninterrupted views of surrounding mountain ranges. It’s also a great time for families, photography lovers, and travellers who prefer relaxed exploration without extreme cold.
For photographers, April is the best season to visit Kufri because it’s Spring season and all plantation, including apple orchards get flowering, which is quite interesting and colourful.
Monsoon (July to September)
Monsoon brings out a different side of Kufri. The hills turn lush green, the valleys look fresh, and the air feels incredibly clean. However, frequent rains, fog, and slippery roads can affect travel plans and visibility. While it’s peaceful and less crowded, this season isn’t ideal if you’re visiting specifically for snow or panoramic views.
Autumn (October and November)
Like monsoon, October and November are also often overlooked for Kufri, but personally, I think this period has its own quiet charm. Overlooked because most people plan a trip to Spiti Valley this time and they prefer staying in Shimla and leaving straight to Kaza (tip: stay in Rangrik over Kaza) avoiding Kufri.
But for me, Autumn in Kufri, because of changing colours, is worth watching. The forests around Kufri take on earthy autumn tones, and the air feels incredibly fresh.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is when Kufri is at its most popular. This is the season for snowfall and classic snow experiences — skiing, snowboarding, sledging, and simply playing in fresh snow. The entire town transforms into a white wonderland, making it especially attractive for first-time snow travellers.
From my personal experience, Kufri in winter feels magical — walking on crisp snow, warming up in cosy cafés, and soaking in snow-covered mountain views is something I never get tired of.
In short, visit Kufri in summer for pleasant weather and views, and in winter if snow is your priority — but if you ask me, winter wins for the sheer magic it brings to the mountains.
