Before I proceed, I want to build your trust in this guide and tell you that I live in Chail (a sleepy town located one and a half hours from Fagu). And living in the neighbourhood, I have explored Fagu on more trips than I can imagine. So yea, this isn’t just a travel guide, it’s a guide written by a local.
Also, for an expert tip, and those looking for a hotel, check out the Youtube Video below with a review of my favourite place to stay in Fagu. I’ve also listed more hotel options in Fagu later in the article, but if you want to know my top pick, start with the video below…
If, however, you are looking for a more polished experience, check out our experience of staying at Dusit D2 in Fagu — a Thailand based 5-star property that has very recently opened in Fagu. This happens to be their first and only hotel across India so imagine the kind of beauty this place might hold.
Please note they are not paid promotion of the properties. I happened to stay at both hotels, liked them, hence sharing my personal review.
Now, let’s proceed with the topic in hand and discuss the destination in detail…
Fagu is slowly emerging from the more famous neighbours, Shimla and Kufri, to establish itself as a pristine, tranquil, and distinctly misty retreat in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh.
Situated at a breathtaking altitude, the village’s name is believed to be derived from the word ‘Fog,’ a white blanket of clouds that frequently swathes its landscapes and apple orchards and terraced fields.
If you are a traveler seeking an escape from the overcrowded tourist hotspots and want to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the Greater Himalayas, Fagu is your answer. From experiencing heavy snowfall to walking through lush green apple orchards, this guide covers everything you need to plan your perfect trip to the ‘Village of Mist.’

The Charm of Fagu: A Destination for All Seasons
Located at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters (8,200 ft) above sea level, Fagu offers a unique blend of natural beauty, adventure, and local Himachali culture.
Unlike the bustling Mall Roads of Shimla, Fagu promises peace and panoramic, uninterrupted views of the snow-clad peaks.
What sets Fagu apart is its primary cultivation: it is the heart of the region’s famous apple and potato farming. Visitors during the harvest season (Monsoon/early Autumn) are treated to a visual feast of fruit-laden orchards and terraced farms, offering a unique glimpse into the rural, agricultural life of the upper hills.
Places To Visit & Things To Do In Fagu
While Fagu itself is a destination best enjoyed by simply relaxing and taking long walks amidst the mist, several key attractions and nearby towns make it a perfect base for exploration.
Fagu Top and Panoramic Views
As one of the highest points in the region, Fagu offers unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the Greater Himalayan ranges, especially the majestic Winter Line phenomenon visible during the post-monsoon and winter months. The sunrise and sunset views from this elevation are simply mesmerizing, making it a photographer’s paradise.
Banthia Devta Temple
This is a significant cultural and religious spot in Fagu. The temple is dedicated to the local deity, Banthia Devta, and is a beautiful example of traditional Himachali hill architecture, often featuring intricate wooden carvings. A visit here offers a peaceful experience and a peek into the local religious practices of the community.
Trekking and Nature Walks
Fagu acts as a wonderful base for several easy to moderate treks. The area is largely free of traffic, making it ideal for peaceful nature walks.
* Fagu Valley Trek: This local trek takes you through dense pine and deodar forests, offering spectacular views of the valley floor.
* Trail to Cheog: An enjoyable descent into the nearby village of Cheog, which has a small, local market and offers another perspective of the valley life.

Apple Orchards
Fagu is synonymous with its sprawling apple orchards.
* Best Time to Visit: The monsoon season (July-September) is the ideal time to see the apples fully ripe and ready for harvest. Many local homestays are located within these orchards, offering an experiential stay where you can learn about the cultivation process.
* Photography: The contrasting green of the terraced fields against the dense cedar forests provides stunning photo opportunities.
Nearby Excursions: Kufri, Mashobra, and Narkanda
Fagu’s strategic location on the Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH-5) makes it an easy day trip away from other prominent destinations:
* Kufri (Approx. 6 km): Famous for the Himalayan Nature Park, the winter sports offered at Mahasu Peak, and various adventure activities.
* Mashobra (Approx. 11 km): A quieter town with a dense reserve forest sanctuary, perfect for nature lovers and bird watching.
* Narkanda (Approx. 45 km): Home to the iconic Hatu Peak (3,400m) and known for its excellent skiing slopes in winter.
Also, if time persists, do not forget to visit the Himalayan Nature Park Kufri Zoo.

Tips For Visiting Fagu
* Connectivity: Airtel and Jio generally offer decent 4G connectivity, especially near the main road and higher points, but be prepared for spotty network in certain pockets of the valley.
* Altitude: At nearly 2,500m, the air is thin. Take it easy on the first day, especially if you plan any intense trekking.
* Cash: While most hotels/resorts accept digital payments, carrying enough cash for local dhabas, small shops, and temple offerings is highly recommended. Kufri or Shimla are the nearest places for major ATMs.
* Packing: Always carry layers! Even in summer, evenings are cool. If travelling in winter, heavy woollens, good quality gloves, and waterproof footwear are essential.
Fagu is not a destination you see; it is a place you experience. Go there to slow down, breathe the clean air, and let the mist envelop you in its timeless charm.
