Nestled in the stunning Zanskar Valley, Gonbo Rangjon (also spelt Gombo Ranjan) is a sacred and awe-inspiring mountain revered by the locals. It’s a dramatic monolithic peak that rises sharply from the valley floor, creating a surreal and majestic landscape. For adventure seekers and spiritual pilgrims alike, camping at the base of Gonbo Rangjon is a unique way to experience Zanskar’s raw beauty.
This is not just a camping trip but a journey into one of Ladakh’s most isolated and serene places, where nature’s grandeur takes center stage, and the night sky comes alive with a blanket of stars.
Manali to Gonbo Rangjon
The journey from Manali to Gonbo Rangjon is an adventure in itself. It starts by crossing the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul Valley, passing scenic spots like Sissu and Keylong, before heading towards the remote Zanskar region via the high-altitude Shinku La Pass (16,580 ft). The rugged landscapes of Zanskar unfold as you reach this isolated mountain. It takes a day to reach Gonbo Rangjon from Manali. I precisely did it in 7 hours. Watch this video below…
But if you are planning a laid-back, you can do it in 2-3 days, with a stopover in places like Jispa or Darcha.
How Long It Takes To Travel?
If you had asked me this question in 2019, when I first visited this place, I would have described it as “a trip from Manali to Gonbo Rangjon generally spans 3-4 days. You’ll need a couple of days to reach the camping site, with additional days to explore the surrounding areas like the Kurgiakh village or even trek to the Phugtal Monastery.”
Here’s a video of my 2019 while exploring Kurgiakh and travelling towards Purne…
But today, you can do it all in 2 days. This includes travelling from and back to Manali and exploringKurgiakh village or even trekking to the Phugtal Monastery.
Road Conditions In Zanskar
When I first visited this route in 2019 the roads were quite rough, especially beyond Darcha. The stretch through Shinku La was particularly challenging, with river crossings and narrow, off-road tracks typical of high-altitude mountain regions. The road conditions were also only suitable for 4×4 vehicles or motorcycles, and they required caution due to steep ascents and descents.
But in 2024, BRO has almost completed the national highway. In the next few years, the region will also get year-round connectivity thanks to the upcoming Shinkula Pass Tunnel.
Travel in a Car or a Motorcycle?
Both cars (preferably SUVs) and motorcycles are suitable for this journey. Many adventurers prefer motorcycles for the thrill of the rugged terrain, but a sturdy vehicle like a 4×4 will offer more comfort and protection from the elements. Ensure your vehicle is well-prepared for tough mountain roads.
Best Time to Travel
The best time to visit Gonbo Rangjon and other parts of Zanskar is from April to November. During these months, the weather is good (with April and November being a little cold but snow everywhere), the passes are open, and the landscape is in full bloom. Avoid traveling during the winter as the region becomes inaccessible due to heavy snowfall (unless you are doing a winter snow drive).
